Types of Squirrels in New York & North America: Squirrels fall into two basic groups: the tree squirrels and the ground squirrels.
Tree squirrels: This group of squirrels are some of the most common nuisance wildlife species and account for the majority of squirrel damage problems encountered by homeowners and business’s. All tree squirrels are capable of destroying a attic if left unattended for too long and many house fires are often attributed to their chewing or gnawing of electric wires which results in house fires and they need to be removed immediately when first noticed.
1. Gray Squirrel-The gray squirrel when mature measures from tip of nose to tail around 18 inches. They can be found in a variety of colors from completely black or mostly black especially around Quebec and Ontario; gray which is very common through out the eastern United States and whiteor albino gray squirrels occur naturally in nature.
2. Flying Squirrel- This species is nocturnal in nature and although called a flying squirrel they actually do not fly but glide. Here in North America we have two types the Northern Flying Squirrel and the Southern Flying squirrel.
3. Red Squirrel- The red or pine squirrel are slightly smaller then their grays squirrel cousin and measure 12 inches from the tip of their noses to their tails.
Ground Squirrels : Unlike their cousins the tree squirrels each of these types of squirrels actually burrow into the ground and don’t seek refuge intrees. The ground squirrel is often confused with both chipmunks and gophers.
There are nine species of ground squirrels here in North America:
Thirteen Lined Ground Squirrel, Artic Ground Squirrel, Beldings Squirrel, California Ground Squirrel, or the Beechey Ground Squirrel, Rock Ground Squirrel, Franklin Ground Squirrel, Richardson Ground Squirrel, or the Wyoming Ground Squirrel, Columbian Ground Squirrel, Townsend Ground Squirrel
